I can't tell you how many times a day Thunderbird becomes "unresponsive" but it is enough to be very annoying. I am pretty sure I checked to see if it was the anti-virus software (AVG) and that wasn't it. What else could it be? Very frustrating!

Start your computer in safe mode with networking. If Thunderbird works okay then it is something outside Thunderbird. If you still have your antivirus doing real time email scans that is more than likely the problem.

OK. So if it is the anti-virus and I disable the email scanning, then it is not working as intended anymore. That is not a solution in my mind. What else can I do?

You sent me a link to a very lengthy article. I have AVG Free. Thunderbird says that program is fine. But what I did not understand was the reference to an email scanner by AVG. Is that not part of AVG Free?

Should I disable the "Email Shield" in AVG Free or not? If so, what is the alternative?

I do not use that antivirus. I have Norton and you have the option to turn off real time email scans. If the article not answer your question you should contact AVG and ask them how to operate their software.

I can disable email scans on AVG. The article was just way too much information for a simple answer. Thanks, I'll figure it out. What I gather is that AVG isn't doing updates for Thunderbird anymore and that is the problem.

You were asked to restart your computer in safe mode with networking as a diagnostic tool. Did you do that? With what results?
