V31 Tbird upgrade
V31 Tbird upgrade Write Window is a Regression on two counts; after inserting a 2nd email address, the first email address disappears. The only way to see both email addresses is to either stretch the frame, or scroll back. By default, the problem is repeated after composing each email. If you are creating an email and sending to several parties, it is believed the Sender should have the right to see the email addresses they are sending.
When opening a window to 'Write' an email, the 'Send To' email address is greyed out as well as the 'Subject' When a window or frame is greyed out, in historical terms, it means it is not relevant or not applicable. Please restore back to white.
Both matters are easily duplicated. I realize this may not be a 'broke' situation. Do I need to provide a compelling and convincing report with colour graphs, charts and happy faces to make my points? - Michael -

re: after inserting a 2nd email address, the first email address disappears. This occurs if you have shortened the header frame area to only show room for one line; this I can replicate.
When I click on 'Write', my version opens and auto shows 3 lines available. So if I enter more than 3 the scrollbar appears facilitaing access to previous 'To' entered email addresses.
Are you saying that your version auto opens showing only one TO line available?
re 'the 'Send To' email address is greyed out as well as the 'Subject' When a window or frame is greyed out,
In my version it is not 'greyed out' in that sense of the term, but the background of the email address does change from White to match whatever window background is being used by you. I use Vista OS, in Control Panel > Personalization , i'm using Windows Vista theme and Window colour and Appearance is Windows Vista Basic. In thunderbird, I'm using default theme 31.0 So in my case it is pale blue, (but not very light pale blue) with black text, the same colour as 'From' and 'To',,,had to remove email address :)
If I hover over a previously entered email address, the background instantly changes to white.
As I have not yet clicked in the content area, you can see in the image below that the 'Body text' and 'variable width' buttons are greyed out in the correct sense of greyed out. I have attached an image below to show you more clearly what I am seeing.
Can you post an image of what you see?

Hi Toad Hall Terrific response to my inquiry. Thank you.
See attached (3 screenshots); For <<Screenshot Simple>>, don't think it much matters whether I am composing a new message to Write or replying, that screenshot is what you see. For <<Screenshot adding 2nd>>, notice in the top right near the cursor. See the new scroll bar? Have to scroll to see the first email address, or move cursor down near message body and a split cursor allows me to stretch the upper portion of the window so all can be seen.
I am using Win 7u, 64 bit with a classic 19" flat monitor 1280x1024. I stand corrected that this is not a regression but more like a glitch since the loss of Send To lines was misbehaving in previous versions. I am using Default 31.0 Appearance. As well, in XP Pro in previous version 24.6, when the Write window is open, if you double clicked a listing in the Address Book, it would register in the Send To window but instantly be gone from vision (back to the scroll bar or stretch the window to verify I chose the correct email address)
So here is something interesting when you mention 'click on Write'. Look at my screenshot <<Click>>. Would you consider that 3 lines? Certainly there is room for 3 lines. But if I fill in the first and then go to the 2nd, the first will slide up and disappear from vision. It is like it is a Windows Desktop resolution thing?
Re: Color Agree that if mouse hovers over input frame it will change to white, but gee, why not just leave that alone as in previous versions, it makes you take an extra glance to see what you are missing; like maybe a Subject... If ok, I will leave color rant out of this inquiry. Just want to know if there is an issue on the Send To window.
Have you tried restarting from the help menu with add-ons disabled? I have had many add-on cause weird issues with these address panes over the years.
Re Color. Change, we all demand it and all complain when it arrives. In this case it is probably something about windows 8 themes. I do not claim to understand.
re: colour - appearance. Very similar to Vista to change themes or just change the colour used in the windows. Try info at these links to help. XP

re: White background changes. Another way to consider this change. If the field is NOT white then you have entered details. If still white then you need to enter details.
So at a glance, although different, you can instantly see if something has been missed because it is still white and will stand out to get your attention. But I see your point. Changes can cause some stress at first because you have become accustomed to the previous setup.
re: new Write window number of spaces for TO field. There are options to suit everyone. You can move the frame up/downwards to increase or decrease the amount of header space. Alternatively, if the frame space is reduced and you enter more TO lines than can be visually displayed due to the reduced header space, then a scroll bar appears. A very small scroll bar (due to using the smallest frame height), may only display the clickable top and bottom arrows with virtually no slider bar.
How to Increase the number of TO fields that display automatically in a new Write message.
However, it would seem that when you open a new Write message you may like to display more TO fields as default. The image you supplied only shows 2 lines for TO field. My image shows 3 lines for a TO field.
Try this:
- 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab
- click on 'Config Editor' button
it will tell you to be careful :)
- In top search type: numRows
look for this line:
- mail.compose.addresswidget.numRowsShownDefault; Value = 3
This is what I have as set as default Value and it works very well.
- double click on the line to open a small editing window.
- Type in eg: 3 (if you currently have 2) or 4 if you really want more auto TO visual fields
- close config Editor - top right X
- click on OK to save changes to Options.
- Close Thunderbird and wait a few moments for background proceses to complete.
- Open Thunderbird and click on 'Write'
This should help you.

Hi Matt Thank you for the suggestion to turn off Add Ons. I did that but no improvement. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, perhaps a video is worth a thousand pictures. See attached file and replace jpg with wmv. Can you replicate this situation I show in the video? I still haven't ruled out that this could be a Windows Graphic problem or a Driver issue; got a GeForce GTX 550 Ti, Vers 70.26 on a Win 7u, 64 bit. For myself, I feel it is worth pursing to determine if there is a better method of preparing email. The current method of having each Send To disappear makes for potential mistakes and embarrassments.
Toad-Hall, In response to your comments on 7/25/14 8:31 AM. 1. In my version 31, the compose window does open 3 lines for Send To but as soon as the first line is inserted with an email address, it disappears by auto-scrolling up. It doesn't way til the 3 lines are filled to initiate this. 2. Thank you for your screenshot of the 'grey-out' (or blue-out) areas in the Compose window. This observation came in the Ver 31 update. Prior to this, any common or frequent window requiring input was always white, that would be the Send To and the Subject. This is no longer the case and was just curious of the logistics to make this change.
Toad-Hall Thank you again for your quick response 7/27/14 07:42 AMre: White background changes. Another way to consider this change. If the field is NOT white then you have entered details. If still white then you need to enter details (see attached screenshot). There is NO white by default in V31 upgrade.
Can I send a video of 200 Kb as wmv to see the Sent To windows that disappear? If so, how? Your server rejected the video file I tried to send yesterday.
The image shows that you have selected the FROM field, so the TO fields will not show White.
To clarify: When you click on 'Write' button and the new Write mssage window opens:
Is the focus on the FROM field as your image shows OR is the From field auto completed with grey background and the first TO field has a white background and the cursor is flashing ready for entry in that first TO field?
Can you supply an image of the new Write window before you select anyrhing.
Increasing the number Send To fields worked. The default is set to 3. Changed setting to 4 and now the 3 fields shown in a Write window stay there and don't disappear until all 3 are filled up. Then as one new Send To is added, one more scrolls up and disappears. All appears normal now. Thank you. By the way, this worked for Win 7u, 64 bit. The setting change did not fix the identical problem on my Win XP pro. But since the problem appears widely across all platforms, I imagine a fix will be supplied when the more attentive users figure out there is in fact a problem. Again, thank you so much with the mysterious 'disappearing Send To field'.
The same problem here, but with stationery add-on installed the value in "mail.compose.addresswidget.numRowsShownDefault" is ignored.
Instead of this, in "Stationery options" there is a field "Number of rows in Addressing Widget". If changed from 2 to 4 will have the same effect.
Toad-Hall, measurem, Matt... thanks!
