What are the KEYstroke(s) used to CLOSE the active tab in the web browser? I am reluctant to use a mouse where I can use keystrokes, as the mouse is a much slower process. In fact, can I find a list of all key strokes which can be used in Firefox, e.g. ALT+S followed by R (once or more) and ENTER used to restore previous browsing session; or CTRL+F to search for a specific word or term? Thank you.

CTRL + W closes one tab at a time. it also closes a window if there's only one tab opened in that browser.

Many thanks. I've tried it and it works, of course. If you know of a source for all/most/some other such key short-cuts, please point me towards it. Thanks again.

You can set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser and make a close button appear if only one tab is open.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.
