Changed IMAP to POP. Now I have errors, such as "msgFilterRules...Conflict.dat. Deleted all my message filters, but this message STILL pops up.

I also have popstate-1.dat & popstate-2.dat 2 Junk folders, 2 Outboxes..

I have screwed this up somehow....

re :Template issue - I opened a message, saves as template. It just went into my Inbox in Local Folders

You want to keep 'Templates' in the actual pop mail account (not 'Local Folders), because that is where you send emails from.

Check your pop mail account settings are correct:

  • Right click on pop mail account name and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Copies & Folders'

Keep message templates in:

  • Select: 'Templates' folder on and pop mail account name

I've included an image below which gives you example of pop mail account 'Copies & Folders'.

  • click on OK

In Folder Pane: Right click on the pop mail account name and select 'New Folder' Give it a suitable name eg: 'Hold'

In the Local Folders account....Right click on the email which you want to use as a template and select 'Copy to' > pop mail account and select 'Hold' folder.

This time..select 'Hold' folder Right click on the email and select 'Edit as new message' modify as required then 'Save' as 'Template' A new 'Templates' folder should appear above the 'Sent' folder with the email in it.

How did you change from IMAP to POP? It's not as simple as just changing the server settings. This article discusses changing from POP to IMAP, but the idea is the same.

That doesn't make too much sense. If you uninstall and reinstall just the Thunderbird email program, the settings would remain in place in the profile, which would be unaffected by a simple program re-installation.

If you did actually search out and delete the profile, or specifically used the profile manager to create a new profile, then please confirm that you did so. Otherwise I would have the same reservations that sfhowes expressed.

As I recall I did delete the profile & create a new one with POP, then pointed TBird to the old profile to recover the thousands of email I have. The address books did not import, so I imported them from .csv files I had exported prior to the swap.

This person keeps messing around with accounts. I had just spent a couple of weeks getting this all sorted.

The person already only had one POP mail account. I have no idea why they were trying to change from IMAP as they were not using it. See info here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1205048?utm_campaign=questions-reply&utm_source=notification&utm_medium=email&page=5 then carried on here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1207280

I reinstalled after I found I had a beta channel version, and features I wanted would not be available in that. When I installed 52.6.0, I used express install, which installed it as IMAP. After I figured that out, I uninstalled & reinstalled as POP. Hence the current issues...

The person had everything in such a mess. Nothing was where it should be. They copy pasted into wrong places and turned the profile into a soup.

The 'msgFilterRules.dat' file were supposed to have been copied from an old profile not in use any more into the new pop mail account to faciliate sorting. But it seems they were pasted into Local Folders and something went amiss in the process.

The person seems to under the impression that they have Local Folders pointing at another mail account. It is not. Everything is now in one profile, with one pop mail account and one Local Folders holding a load of emails imported from other defunct profile.

The original profile had a pop account using same email address using different server settings with a load of folders containing emails which needed to be imported over to new profile name so they could be viewed. They were put into Local Folders. The new POP mail account obviously was just receiving everything into Inbox.

Quoted from a previous topic thread:

re: Message Filters:

Exit Thunderbird.

Message Filters are in this file: msgFilterRules.dat It has a size of 29kb, so must have some filters. You can open that file using Notepad to read filters.

The 'msgFilterRules.dat' file can be copy / pasted into your current profile name mail account folder:

It should be in the same place as your Inbox mbox file.

Did you do the above?

more options

I did not paste any "msgFilterRules.dat' file into the profile or anywhere else. I just recreated the rules as I got emails into my Inbox.

I certainly can delete that file & start over. Not that much of a hassle.

Exit Thunderbird Access:

  • E:\Data\NAS Echo\Thunderbird\4lmjatm5.default\Mail\secure.emailsrvr.com folder
  • delete 'popstate-1.dat'
  • delete 'popstate-2.dat'

Start Thunderbird

Note: emails will come in to the pop mail account for your email address. You can create folders in that account and use them for sorting emails. You can also sort emails to be put in any folder in 'Local Folders' for storage. You do not need to create a Template folder in the pop mail account as one will be auto created when you first want to save an email as a Template.

In pop mail account, you seem to have moved some folders into the Inbox. 'Drafts' and 'Sent' need to be moved out of the 'Inbox' - they are not sub folders to the Inbox. Left click hold down and drag to hover over the pop mail account name then release them. This will move them up a level.

In 'Local Folders' mail account You have managed to put a 'Junk', Trash' and 'Outbox' into the 'Inbox' as subfolders. In the 'Inbox' folder....Please delete the subfolder 'Junk' and subfolder 'Trash' as you already have those folders - hopefully they will go as they are subfolders. Outbox should be moved out. Left click hold down and drag to hover over the 'Local Folders' mail account name then release. This will move 'Outbox' up a level and out of the Inbox.

The 'Outbox' is used by all mail accounts when you want to use 'Send Later' option.

If you did not copy paste then that is ok. It is perfectly ok for you to create new Message Filter rules for the pop mail account.

So what exactly are the two folders that say: 'msgfilterRules_Duncan-Pc_Mar-07-155029-2018_conflict.dat'

Have you created any Message Filters in the 'Local Folders' mail account?

noticed you already have an Outbox in correct location so delete this subfolder as well. Tell me if all three manage to go to Trash.

Template issue - I opened a message, saves as template. It just went into my Inbox in Local Folders

Sent moved into the POP account ok. Drafts won't move. Looked in Properties, can't rename or cut/paste to correct name of mailbox:///E:/Data/NAS Echo/Thunderbird/4lmjatm5.default/Mail/secure.emailsrvr.com/Drafts

Trash in Inbox won't move or delete. Trash is actually going there. Outbox in Inbox won't move or delete.

Message Filters are in the POP acct. None in Local Folders.

Clips shows state after all changes.

No apparent content in the msgFilterRules_DUNCAN-PC_Mar-07-155029-2018_Conflict.dat & I can't find them..

Trash in Local Folders Inbox won't move or delete. Outbox in Local Folders Inbox won't move or delete. I did kill Junk in Local Folders.

Sorry I have screwed this all up again!

Let's try fixing this from inside the profile folder.

re :E:/Data/NAS Echo/Thunderbird/4lmjatm5.default/Mail/secure.emailsrvr.com/Drafts This is where it should be, but... does not exist because the 'Drafts' file is in your Inbox as a subfolder which is wrong.

Exit Thunderbird.

So look in

Then copy the 'Drafts' file and the 'Drafts.msf' file Paste them here:

so they appear with the Inbox, Sent, Trash files when this is done go back into Inbox.sbd folder and delete the 'Drafts' file and the 'Drafts.msf' file.

In E:/Data/NAS Echo/Thunderbird/4lmjatm5.default/Mail/secure.emailsrvr.com You will see 'Unsent Messages' and 'Unsent Messages.msf' This is the 'Outbox' and it should not be in the pop mail account. Please delete 'Unsent Messages' mbox file and 'Unsent Messages.msf' file.

Then....do a similar thing in the 'Local Folders' account.

  • E:/Data/NAS Echo/Thunderbird/4lmjatm5.default/Mail/Local Folders/Inbox.sbd folder

In 'Inbox.sbd' folder you will see: 'Unsent Messages' and 'Unsent Messages.msf' 'Trash' and 'Trash.msf' Delete all of four of those files.

Then go up directory to : E:/Data/NAS Echo/Thunderbird/4lmjatm5.default/Mail/Local Folders folder You should now see: msgFilterRules_DUNCAN-PC_Mar-07-155029-2018_Conflict.dat delete the files.

Start Thunderbird and report back on results.
