My Firefox browser doesn't "boot" up. I re-installed it but it didn't work. Then I uninstalled and re-installed it but no success.

The background of this issue started when I noticed that a foreign object appearing as a "google-like" toolbar stuck to my desktop page (very top section, like a slightly bigger toolbar). Being uncomfortable with its existence, I downloaded malwarebyte and ran the program after which it disappeared.

After this success, I noticed firefox wouldn't start, I doubled clicked the desktop icon (and a circular blue motion appears on the cursor momentarily) but it wont go any further.

So I re-installed, no success. I uninstalled then re-installed but no success (firefox wont start). This is a bit frustrating as I have some bookmarks & profile I wont like to loose.

Thanks all for your anticipated help.

Hi, if 'Run' won't start it sounds like a Windows issue - try Restart (not Shutdown) on your PC.

Try disabling Malwarebytes if it's still installed.

Try a Clean Reinstall; this means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location. With Firefox closed, use another browser to download Firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ and save the file to somewhere convenient on your computer.

Now delete the Firefox installation folder which should be in one of the following locations -

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

You can now double click the file you previously downloaded to install Firefox.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you!

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Furthermore, I have tried to create a new profile as a possible remedy but the profile dialogue box will not appear. Pressing the required windows button and R does not bring it out. alternatively, I have chosen the directory manually (browse function) and still no joy.

Many thanks @scribe and all that offered their knowledge to help.

@scribe, all I did was to uninstall malwarebyte and decided to try it out and voila!, my firefox with all its bookmark opened like magic.

Left me wondering how malwarebyte could do its work but still prevent a genuine application(firefox) from functioning. Guess all softwares have their peculiar background activities that can be deemed suspicious.

Thank you all for the help.
