Changing "When I delete a message" to "move it to this folder" only kindof works . . . (v38.5.1, OS X, gmail/imap)

Title pretty much says it all. One thing that I have noticed (from a previous question on this forum) is that if I change it to one of the other options (e.g., "Remove it immediately"), click Ok, reopen the server settings, change it back to "Move it to this folder", and click Ok, then it works fine. Until . . . I close Thunderbird and start it again, at which time, the problem reappears. However, as long as Thunderbird stays open, the "fix" works fine.

FYI, in the pathological state, the email retains the "Inbox" tag in gmail, and does not get moved to the chosen folder, but does disappear from the Inbox folder in Thunderbird.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Try safe mode Hold shift while starting Thunderbird until your prompted to continue in safe mode.

It might be an add-on messing things up.

Ok, I gave it a shot, and the pathological behavior was unchanged. Incidentally, the only plugins I have installed are Lightning (4.0.5.2) and "Search for Sender" (1.3.2).
