See https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/15c09322-1e2a-4874-bac2-807e02150708

You may give Thunderbird 38.1.0 a try, but I'm not exactly sure it's fixed there.

oh,.. christ1, thanks for the link!... it mentions redrawing... that is, the UI graphics, I assume? This is interesting cuz, there is a sluggishness and repainting of the UI sometimes.. hmm?

...again.. if it helps.. the most common system crash occurs and/or manifest when I open TB and there is a new message.

My reading of Bug 1161815 and 1162520

Leads me to believe that the fix exists only in Geko 39. Thunderbird development train does not stretch to 39 as yet. However there is a developers build of V42 here that you could install and see if it stops the crashes. As it is obstensibly build on Geko 42 it should work for you. But please post back your results.

You don't need to post any crash dumps to your Dropbox, just post the crash IDs here. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports

christ1... TB is NOT or CAN NOT generate crash ID's,.. TB hangs/crashes my Windows 8.1... I am forcing a DMP report from Taskmanager... I also can NOT stop TB as a process.

What is the alternative to this problem?

more options

...from what I just read,.. a full process DMP should be ok.

Ok, we have crossed purposes.

1, Windows crash dumps are not all that helpful usually. This is because the mozilla crash reporter which we are somewhat familiar with does not use them. It uses it's own, of which you have only shown one. These in my experience always start with BP and a GUID of some sort.

2. System crashes of the kind your listing usually indicate a very serious crash, hence no crash reporter uploads. But Mozilla applications can and do make their own crash dumps and upload them.. If your settings allow it of course.

Now did you try the daily build? Could you try safe mode? (hold the shift key while you start Thunderbird. Among the normal expectations of disabling add-ons, it also disables hardware acceleration for graphics. I have a feeling it might be involved here. There is not much else that could cause a system crash really.

System crashes basically require the program to be interacting with the hardware in ring 0 of the CPU. (real mode) as ALL versions of windows have abstracted application software to ring 3 for decades. The only things that can cause this really are bugger drivers and software making poorly formed requests that the buggy driver does not cope with. For an application to be doing this usually means it is trying to interact with the hardware very closely, most often is is games or video tat prompts this.

SO check the video driver particularly, but that all drivers are up to date. In the case of Video do not rely on windows update. Reach out to the device manufacturer for updates.

Is this getting any better?

Hello Matt, Thanks for that.. Yes, I understand, it is clear I'd need to get a debugger to capture something for you guys because it never create's a report now. I have tried a few daily builds before last V42 version and the official deployed version. Your last few clues regarding drivers and the other error reports are pointing to what I am now believe is the problem,.. video or video drivers from nVidia or how TB talks with them? I have a "GeForce GT 750M" using driver "353.06" What I noticed was,.. when I RMB over the TB shortcut, my option to "Run with graphics processor" was set as a custom "High performance nVidia processor (default)???... This is my 3D custom setting. And, I could NOT change it in the 3D settings. (failed to apply) to the "Integrated graphics" (intel) as default? So, I ran it in "Integrated graphics" mode several times..... NO CRASHING!. ok.. I think we are on to something now!? After that I tried again to change the 3D settings... it took the default (non custom) 3D setting!? I ran it in that 3D default mode... and NO CRASHES!? And, again, I tried to change the 3D settings... and it now allowed me to change it to "Integrated graphics"??? I've been working in 3D for >25yrs as a designer and I have never seen anything like this before in a email app... or TB, ever. BTW, again, SeaMonkey crashes like this as well (I uninstalled it so can not test this yet) You are right about games.. and 3D programs crashing themselves,.. this I understand! BUT... a system crash and lock!? .. not a common problem from my experience. (have to admit, have not been playing 3D games lately though) Could nVidia or Mozilla have assumed some dll linking to take advantage of 3D web graphics?

Anyhow, I'll continue reporting.. but I've work to get out!

Cheers..

btw/fyi... Firefox default setting is "Integrated graphics"

As I understand it Firefox is having a hell of a time with certain chipsets and drivers. Unfortunately Thunderbird is a beneficiary of their decisions so often we get "features" that are not really relevant in a mail client. One of those in my opinion is hardware acceleration. While you have Thunderbird running go to the general tab under advanced in the options and deselect hardware acceleration.

Then try starting again. Does that help on the process at all?
