Have tried everything to place bookmarked web sites in the bookmarks toolbar. But to no avail. One solution was to drag the Icon from the address bar, but I only see a padlock. When trying to bookmark a site from the drop down menu and ask it to go to the bookmarks toolbar, nothing happens. Anyone help?

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display a hidden menu bar)

Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

In the past year, Firefox changed from showing the site icon ("favicon") in the URL bar to showing the globe or lock, depending on the type of connection. So if you saw a help article referring to the site icon in that location, we need to update it.

If you go ahead and drag that globe or lock to the Bookmarks Toolbar, it should work.

It also should work if you drag the tab to the Bookmarks Toolbar.

One issue with adding bookmarks to the toolbar using one of the dialogs is that they show up at the end. Look for >> at the end of the bar to see the bookmarks that do not fit on the bar.

If you need to fit more on your Bookmarks Toolbar, of course there are add-ons for that. You could try this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fire.../roomy-bookmarks-toolbar/.

Any luck?

I had already done the things suggested and after three attempts of closing Firefox and restarting computer it finally worked. Thanks for your help. No logical explanation for it eventually working. The only thing I have done recently is upgrade from XP (Google Toolbar) to Windows 7 and copied over the Firefox profile where everything worked except for this problem. Computers ??? Tax your patience!!!
