If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

i am running Mac OSX 10.6 and am not sure how to trash my current Firefox 5.0 and install the Firefox 6.0.2dmg (28.1 MB-utwente.nl) that is in my download folder today. Do i drag that folder to the desktop & then Trash the Firefox 5.0 from my Applications folder? How do i install the new version from my desktop? Do i drag that into my Applications folder? Sad to say i do not have that much expertise!

I found cor-el's reply helpful - thanks. Drawlind, I struggled trashing the old version, until I transsferred it from Applications to the desktop thence to trash. After that drag the new version to applications as you suggest
