Sans serif Arabic text entry does not connect letters

I am using Firefox 3.6.11 and extensively use online Arabic dictionaries. When I go to certain sites and search for a term in Arabic, it is not rendered correctly in the text entry field. The letters do not connect to each other, which is crucial for reading and writing Arabic. It is instructive to note that these sites render my text in a Segoe UI lookalike, whereas it works fine on sites like Google which use different font settings. Overriding the site with the settings in Options does not work either.
Here are some copypasta examples if you don't have an Arabic keyboard:

My example from Wikipedia, but it affects many other sites as well (WordReference.com, dictionary.sakhr.com). Assistance is greatly appreciated.

Can you add a screenshot for comparison that show how you see it and what it should look like?
I can't read Arabic, so I can't tell what is wrong and if it is a font problem or a generic rendering problem.
Did it work better in previous Firefox versions?
Does it only happen in a text area or on web pages as well?
The Ministry text shows as distinct letters, but the others have connected letters except the ر
I have a screenshot here. The red circles indicate areas of incorrect rendering, which also seems to affect the drop-down box. All other Arabic renditions work perfectly; the green circle indicates how the word should be written (the extra marks are vowels).
This is my first install of FF x86 on this machine. I built the computer less than a month ago.
PS. There are six non-connecting Arabic letters and one standalone symbol: ا د ذ ر ز و ء
