46.0.1 cut and paste is broken: text editor crashes

Ever since this update, EVERY time I cut & paste from a website (text and maybe also links), TextEdit crashes. Using OSX 10.6.8. I know there will be an end to compatability with this OS, but I would presume that I would stop getting auto-updates sent to my system when that occurs.

If that's the problem, what do I have to do to go back to the previous version?

Did you notice this change between Firefox 45 and Firefox 46, or between Firefox 46.0 and Firefox 46.0.1?

Can you paste into other applications without problem or is this universal on your system?

In recent versions, Firefox removed some older formats from the clipboard and then put some of them back because some applications couldn't work without them. I don't know whether anyone tested your version of TextEdit.

If the problem is only with TextEdit, you could consider a third party editor, for example, and I haven't tried it myself:

pastes OK into MS word. TextEdit is my standard app, I add material to existing files so switching to some other isn't good.

This started some days ago. Was it a pure update or just a security update in the last week or so?

46.0.1 was a security update & released on May 3, 2016 already. so if your problem started a couple of days ago only, it will probably be unrelated...

I can paste into Thunderbird, but the same clipboard crashes TextEdit. There have been no changes to my system! There was some sort of security update a few days ago -- if not FireFox then it was Thunderbird. How is the cut/copy handling of the two apps linked (common code etc) ?

Try the workaround and first paste the clipboard to Word since you wrote that that works. Then you can do another copy and paste from Word to TextEdit to see if that works.

When you select and copy in Firefox, a number of different formats are placed on the system clipboard. These include plain text, HTML, and some legacy formats.

I'm not personally familiar with how the clipboard works on the Mac, but assuming it is similar to Windows, the receiving application selects the format it prefers and uses that. In Word, if instead of pasting you click the drop-down on the paste button on the ribbon and choose Paste Special, you can see the list of formats on the clipboard that Word understands. That might not be all of the available formats. Word should highlight or bold the default format it prefers, but Paste Special allows you to choose a different one if you like.

you can review your firefox update history by going to the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > update panel.

Pasting from website to Word, then COPY from Word, does not crash TextEdit. So something has happened either to FireFox or every website I visit. Occam's Razor says its Firefox.

Its not a workaround to double paste; I use TextEdit because it consumes less RAM than Word. I certainly cannot keep BOTH open

Cannot show them on the Mac. TextEdit has Paste and Paste & Match Style. In Word, well, I'm using Word X for Mac, circa 2000. Choice of Unformatted Text or HTML Format.

Bottom line is, unless all these websites have changed, its something with FireFox in this last update.

How do I go back one rev?

Firefox 47 is schedule to launch later this week. You might try to hang on until you can test whether that fixes it.

just restarted under 45..1.1

Still crashing TextEdit when I paste something into it from a website

also:

1) its broken the menu: view/ZOOM function. This REPLY box is less than 1/3 the width of my screen; text is correspondingly miniscule. Also NoSmall Text & NoSquint addons not working. Can't use the app without magnification.

2) before this update, and this restart into this update, whenever I quit & restarted, it had to "recover my previous session" instead of optionally "history/ restore previous session" -- so its been crashing upon quit.

3) CPU temp went over 200 deg when restarting; % CPU about 116% so not abnormal there. But obviously its trying to re-open too many ports/threads/whatever you call them at the same time.

How do I go back to the previous rev?

restarted again. Didn't crash, but ZOOM still broken.

Oh my. Now the version is saying 47.0. It didn't "take" after the first restart.

Update on details: When I "paste & match style" then TextEdit does not crash.

Also, when I copy & paste from an html document that is about 10 years old, its crashing. So this is some bug in the recent FireFox messing-around-with.

I need to go back a few revisions. How do I do that? Just find an older rev (there's a list somewhere, I recall) and install from the .dmg over version 47.0?
