I became unable to access the internet with firefox, when I could with other browsers. I removed Firefox and reinstalled with the same result. What should I do?

I also added the newly downloaded version of Firefox to the list of programs allowed 'thru' my firewall with the same result.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I already did that with no success, but failed to mention that action in my original comment. However, I finally used the System Restore function in Windows to get back to a point where Firefox worked, which it now does. I have no idea why the problem suddenly appeared.

Since I create websites, I have six browsers installed. Of the six, Firefox and Chrome suddenly could not access the internet; all the rest, including IE, could. In no case until the problem occurred did I make any special provision in my firewall rules.
