I have Windows XP. I keep a lot of tabs open in Firefox on a regular basis for easy access. I have it set so that they automatically reopen when I reopen Firefox. Tonight I didn't realize that when I clicked a link in an Amazon email, it actually opened a new Firefox window and that that window stayed open when I closed my other tabs. Firefox now thinks that one Amazon window is the tab to be recovered. It shows nothing in recently closed tabs either! I tried opening Firefox about 3 times before I realized what was going on; now I am panicked and don't know what to do for recovery. i am over in internet explorer right now typing this because I don't want to disturb things anymore. what can I do. Thank you.

Hello RainbowGlow, you can reopen the recently closed tabs by using Ctrl+Shift+T.

I don't know when exactly you are supposed to hit those keys, but all it did for me was bring up Google home page, plus a new page tab with about 6 frequently used bookmark like mini pages desplayed on it. Not the tabs I was looking for, and the "recently closed tabs" arrow shows nothing!

Did you check for History > Recently Closed Windows?

  • Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar to make sure that you close all open windows at once.

You should be able to find the sites in the browsing history.

  • You can toggle the History sidebar on/off via "View > Sidebar > History" or Ctrl+H (Command+H on Mac)

I *did* check for History>Recently closed Windows and its grayed out and not clickable, although the advice on closing Firefox another time is interesting and useful for later.

I know I can find the URLs in my History, but it would take a long time and be labor intensive to find them all amongst the forest of links for yahoo emails etc etc (Firefox puts down every single click and then some). I am desperately trying to avoid that. I hoped to find a backup file somewhere, but maybe it's too late. I am now using Google Chrome so I don't disturb Firefox while I search for an answer, but before I realized the problem, I tried clicking Firefox open about 3 or 4 times. One time in fact it said it would attempt restoration, but the restoration was of the one window/tab, not the dozens I am looking for.

Any further thoughts?

You can't bring them back if you do not have a copy of the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder.

You can check the browser.sessionstore.* prefs on the about:config page and reset user set (bold) browser.sessionstore.*prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.

My aunt walked me through a systems restore for my computer for when I lost most of my tabs. I don't know if it's the same for you since I use Windows 7, but it was: Start > Help and Support (type in 'restore') > Restore system Files and Settings > 'Click To Open Systems Restore' > (whatever date that you want) > Restore

Hope that helps!
