My email told me to download Firrefox version 12. Running tells me I'm using an unknown version, and wants to download the latest version, 11. I don't understand!!!

As soon as I installed and ran v 12 the program gave me a message that it was an unknown version. Then it asked if I wanted to download the latest version, version 11. That's what was confusing.

As soon as I installed and ran v 12 the program gave me a message that it was an unknown version. Then it asked if I wanted to download the latest version, version 11. That's what was confusing.

The "Whats new" page for 12.0 was not updated for Firefox 12.0 yet since it is not officially released just yet but will be on Tuesday April 24 sometime. It appears to recognize it as current now.
