Thunderbird opens to Account Central before going to InBox and mail page

I have avoided going from version 52 to 60 because of the loss of some Extensions, but finally made the change on both my desktop and laptop.

Both computers now open to the Account Central page momentarily before going to the Mail InBox page.

I see that there have been several bug reports on this issue but apparently no corrective action.

Both computers are running Windows 10 Pro with the latest updates from Microsoft.

There was no problem with version 52, but Thunderbird 60.4.0 definitely has an unresolved issue.

Correct. This is bug 1484270. Unclear when it will be resolved.

Thanks, I was wondering if I was the only one seeing this or if I had a profile issue on both my computers.

Maybe I should go back to version 52 --- several addons I really miss, too----- like Color Folders.

Colored Folders (Color Folders redux) works in TB 60. What other add-ons are you missing? Several have been rewritten or can be 'made' to work with simple adjustments.

WOW! Thanks.......too bad the old version site can't forward to the new one. I had searched all over for a new (compatible) version.

Since you mentioned it, there is one other that I used consistently --- Automatic Export (of the Lightning Calendar). If I toggle the "strict compatibility" to False, the Addon works just fine, but I doubt leaving that setting is probably not a good idea.

Do you happen to know if there is a rewrite of this one, too?

more options

I'm not aware of a replacement for Automatic Export, last updated almost 7 years ago, and according to the reviews it's not working properly in TB 60. This site describes some options, and states (08-2018) "A replacement for the Add-on Automatic Export is currently not in sight."

more options

Too bad. It was working prior to the recent updates to Lightning and TB.

I don't read German, but I'm guessing one of the"options" is to manually export the calendar(s).

Thanks for checking.

more options

It's far beyond what you need for automatic calendar backups, but there is a scheduled, incremental profile folder backup feature with the ImportExportTools add-on (see picture).

more options

Yep, that is over-kill for just the calendar backup, but when all else fails......I'll give it a try.

My absolute favorite Addon is BirdieSync - really a great tool for contacts and calendar to my phone.

For backup, I have been using MTB (Mozilla Thunderbird Backup) for years --- allows for Thunderbird, Firefox as well as Personal Groups (Documents, etc.). Author no longer in business but I am so greatful for his support and development over the years.

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions. This thread got way off-topic, but I appreciate the help.

Ok - I'm going back to version 52.

This momentary opening of the Account Central page is ridiculous.

And from reading the comments on the multiple bug reports, seems very unlikely to be resolved.

Bug 1481642 , Bug 1484270---- they seemed to think this was an addon issue but the second bug report puts it back on a problem with Version 60.

They even state, "(1) is distracting, (2) seems a regression, i.e. I did not notice it on earlier versions of Thunderbird."

I think this may be related to the initialization of Thunderbird and Account Central (and it did not happen in version 52.9.1):

After the Account Central page opens and Thuderbird finally opens to the Classic View - I have the following selected: Message list, Folder Pane, Message Pane and To Do Pane selected in "View."

I have the Messages sorted by date with the most recent at the bottom of the Message list.

If I select the first message with the cursor and then clicking on the message -- it does populate in the Message Pane.

Now, if I Delete the current message by selecting "Delete" the message is deleted but the entire message list flashes, the cursor disappears.

If I then select the next message with the cursor and click, the next message populates in the Message Pane and I can delete and keep going through the list without a problem.

It only seems to happen with the first selection of a message. Its almost like Thunderbird isn't really stable on the first opened message.

If I go back to 52.9 --- no problem (and no Account Central, either). Same addons, same View/Layout items selected. Also, it doesn't make any difference if I have the messages sorted with the newest at the top of the list.

If this thread is too old, should I post this as a new issue?

Thanks

I haven't experienced the spurious display of Account Central or the message list flashing when the first one is deleted, but I think before you report it as a new issue, it's worth testing your setup in TB safe mode, or with a fresh profile and one account and no add-ons or customizations. You can run the new profile independently of the existing one, and start TB in either one.

To start Profile Manager, close TB, Winkey+R, and type: thunderbird.exe -p

If the problems persist with the new profile, it's easier to make the case that the problem lies with TB, not the profile.

Hi - thanks for the quick reply.

Safe Mode does not have the problem - but in Safe Mode it always opens to Account Central and then I have to select the Inbox.

It may be an addon and I can go through and disable them one at a time and test.

After switching to a test profile -- of course it was empty and had no messages in the inbox --- not a good test.

But then using the Select Profile and choosing my default user profile -- I don't have the issue --- which is strange --- it still opens the message list, goes back to Account Central and then back to the message list.

My default profile is probably the one I had from Windows 7 all the way through to Windows 10 and the newest Thunderbird.

I really don't want to have to configure a totally new profile but suspect there may be items in there that are no longer required...ugh.

My addons are pretty straight forward: Account Colors, Addon Button, BirdieSync, Colored Folders, Empty Trash, Folder Pane View Switcher, Get Selected E-Mails, Lightning, Manually Sort Folders, More Functions for Address Book, Quick Folders, Quick Text, and Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate).

If you see anything obvious in that list, please let me know.

Also, I know the program has to open the following toolbars:

Menu Toolbar, Mail Toolbar, BirdieSync, QuickFolders Toolbar, Folder Pane Toolbar and Status Bar --- all of which probably takes some initialization time to open.

Its strange the problem is not happening now and I did a restart. Maybe I should do a shutdown and see if it comes back?

Thanks again --- any suggestions would be helpful.

If safe mode doesn't have the problem, but TB doesn't open with the same folder that was open at last exit, rename or delete session.json from the profile folder (while TB is closed).

Enabling add-ons one-at-a-time is worth trying. I think you can remove Folder Pane View Switcher and use the built-in View/Toolbars/Folder Pane Toolbar.

As suggested, add one account to the test profile to see what happens. As much as it's a hassle to set up a new profile, there are many benefits to rebuilding mail folders and bypassing the inevitable 'profile rot' of an old profile.

Thanks - I'll keep digging and let you know.

I was thinking of copying the profile over to my laptop (from the desktop) and see if the problem exists on the other system.

I sure hate the thought of building the mailboxes, accounts, extensions and address books, etc.

Its too bad there isn't a way to "clean" a profile --- probably a lot of "stuff" from earlier versions of TB that aren't even being accessed any more.

It is strange that this behavior (Account Central after the main page is built and back) doesn't happen when I go back to version 52 but re-appears after loading 60.

More digging and I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

By the way, was bug 1484270 ever resolved? Its sort of what started my original issue.
