I'm running windows 7 with no antivirus other than windows defender built in to windows. On occasion I'll download AVG free to double check for viruses and come up with nothing so then I'll delete it. Always felt they caused more issues than they fixed.

Anyway, Thunderbird seems to be crashing a lot lately and it could be for different reasons each time. Almost always now when I send a message with a link or attachment it crashes. Sometimes just receiving a new email it crashes. Other times I won't do anything but have it running in the background and it will crash. It's getting extremely frustrating. I have two computers with Thunderbird and the other computer doesn't have any of these issues. Please help!

Please copy to clipboard and paste the Crash report information. (click all reports before copying.)

Hmm, doesn't show any crash reports...

Usually it totally locks up and says (not responding) so I close it and restart the program.

So it is not crashing! it is locking up. Very different really.

Try the following as a test.

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

Yeah I've done this before and it SEEMED to be ok. Wasn't sure what would have been causing the problem though...

this time create a clean startup in normal mode. Microsoft have instructions here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/331796?wa=wsignin1.0

In the process you will be presented with a list of non Microsoft programs that start with your computer., It will be one of them. When I go there I also get an offer of a fixit program. I have no idea if that will fix anything, but it can not hurt to try.

The clean startup did not fix the problem...

more options

turn off defender and see if that is it.

more options

Well... Tried to do that and it says it's already turned off. In fact I tried to turn it back on to run it and it's not allowing me.

more options

Nevermind. I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials. That's why defender wouldn't open. I'll try turning it off.

Well I switched off MSE and that wasn't it either.

Issue still not resolved.

Still have the issue. Any other ideas?

Nobody? Nothing?

I'm about to give up on the program all together. So annoying to have to restart it every single time I send an email...

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Well, I have all of my startup items turned off and my antivirus completely off as well with no luck. Next I've tried turning off my addons and every time I try to save the settings Thunderbird locks up.
