My Thunderbird account has several folders under the Inbox and several under Local Folders. I think the older messages are under Local Folders. What is the best usage? I also want to be able to back up the mail folders, but I saw that in my Thunderbird profile there is a Mail folder with subfolders called Local Folders and mail.comcast.net which has a subfolder called Inbox.sbd.

What is the functional benefit of Local Folders compared to creating them under the Inbox?

When you change from comcast to ATT and delete the comcast account your mail will disappear. IF it is in Local folders it will not as that is the intrinsic Thunderbird "Local Machine", account independent location.

You can actually instruct Thunderbird to use that location of POP mail accounts from comcast and other providers. in account setting. > Server settings in the advanced is an option to direct the inbox for another account to be used. If you select local folders than your comcast account basically disappears from the folder pane and all new mail appears in the local folders.

The Outbox is in your Local Folders. And, unless you create new folders under it and move messages into them, nothing stays in there very long.

My question still stands. What is the purpose of Local Folders compared to creating subfolders under the Inbox?

Is there a Thunderbird developer who can explain this?
