For the last few updates, I notice that the install puts an second icon on my taskbar, even though one is already there. A minor issue to be sure, but I thought I would point it out as I'm sure it's a minor fix. (Windows 7 Pro-64, with 64-bit US English install)

Did you check for Firefox in both locations?

  • (64 bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32 bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Does that issue exist with the current Firefox 54 version? June 13 is when Firefox 54 was released. That may have been fixed already.

You can use Help > About Firefox to trigger a manual update check and installation of the latest version at any time.

The last time I saw it was as I installed 54.0.1; so YES.

The install process automatically places an icon on the task bar -- without asking permission -- but also without checking to see if there already is an icon there. So we end up with two icons.

BUMP

Addendum: I have just realized that the new (2nd) icon on the task bar launches the newly installed version. The previously existing icon -- which is not removed by the install process -- launches THE OLD VERSION.

Are both versions 64 bit Firefox versions or is the old version a 32 bit version?

I have since deleted the icon for the "old" version, so I can't tell. You may have a point, but I usually install the 64-bit version.

Having said that, I still think the installer should check for the existence of a previous version's icon and take appropriate action. If it was a 32-bit version being replaced by a 64-bit version, should the installation process not offer to remove the 32-bit one?

Methinks, good sir, that thou art a genius!

Sure enough I had an old 32-bit program and the newer 64-bit one.

Now the question is how to uninstall teh 32-bit version without affecting the 54-bit one.

If you only see one Firefox in the Windows Control Panel (i.e. no uninstall that points to the installation folder of the 32 bit version) then you can simply delete the 32 bit Firefox installation folder.

Problem solved. Thank you.

REVO UNINSTALLER found one 32-bit and two 64-bit versions. I have uninstalled all but the most recent 64-bit.

I still think the installer could be a little "smarter" about detecting old/different versions and offering a "clean-up" process.
