Firefox 49.0.2 works fine, but I'm unable to upgrade to Firefox 50: the upgraded version doesn't work and won't shut down.

In early October, Microsoft forced an upgrade on my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Firefox 49.0.2 continued to work fine. Then Firefox 50 came along, and when the automatic upgrade occurred, Firefox would no longer work. It appears normal on the screen, but it won't search for web site from my saved bookmarks, and it won't connect to sites that I identify by keying the url into the address bar. It also won't shut down - in order to close Firefox, I have to invoke Task Manager. I've tried uninstalling Firefox 50 and reinstalling it - that doesn't work. I also tried completely uninstalling Firefox 49.0.2, restarting the computer, and then doing a fresh installation of Firefox 50, but nothing seems to work.

I've reverted to Firefox 49.0.2 as a temporary measure (disabling the auto-upgrade feature), but that's not a good long-term solution. What do I do? Wait for Firefox 51? Abandon Firefox altogether?

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).

I thought I had done that, but I tried again and this time it worked.

FF50 seems to be working properly now.

Before I forget - simply updating the Norton list did not solve the problem. But thenI had Firefox 50 restart without add-ons, and then it started working. The add-ons we automatically restored. So was it a Norton firewall problem, and add-on problem, and conflict between Norton and an add-on, or some totally unrelated issue?

But whatever it was, it magically went away.
