Bing is my homepage and when it first opens I see the Daily Image and newsfeed. Subsequent windows just open to Bing with a gray screen. No problems with Bing on IE. This problem has occasionally happened in the past but only for a day. This time it has been this way for around 5 or 6 days. I updated to FF v. 44.0.2 on Feb. 18th but this problem just started recently. When this happened I had not made any changes or upgrades. After looking for suggestions online did try clearing cache which didn't help. Do have Adblock Plus but haven't changed anything with it. I am very much a layperson and am out of ideas.

Thank you. -Andy

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies
Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to.

Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.
  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

Thank you for the prompt response. I had previously tried clearing the cache which had no effect. Regarding clearing cookies: I have always had “Accept cookies from sites” unchecked. I only have a small number of exceptions that are always allowed and just use Cookie Controller add on to temporarily turn cookies on as needed and then immediately remove them and toggle the “allow cookies” off. Because, as I mentioned in my question, I had occasionally had the problem with Bing in the past but it resolved itself within about a day, I figure that corrupted cookies is not the problem so did not try removing the cookies I do keep as you suggested. Being very much an amateur at all this – I don’t know if that makes sense or not.

Regarding turning off Use Hardware Acceleration – I found that I could just go to Tools-Options-Advanced and uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available”. I unchecked it but that did not resolve the problem.

Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Cookies and cache can sometimes become corrupted. Removing them causes no harm since they will be rebuilt. But you will no longer be logged into any websites.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

On the left side of the page, select Appearance. Then select Default.

Thanks to Fred McD. I did finally delete all my cookies and for good measure cleared the cache again. Bing homepage now functioning normally. I appreciate the good advice.
