Why has the latest update of Thunderbird turned a fine email client into a buggy peice of crap that is almost unuseable, and what can I do about it?

Since the last update Thunderbird crashes repeatedly, has scripts hang and is nearly unusable. Any suggestions?

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I tried both to no avail. From the time I click on a message to the time it loads can take as long as 60 seconds or more, if I try to delete a message it takes even longer and I get a script error message. The program has taken to crashing several times a day. Up until your last update the program has been remarkably stable.

Yes, I use McAfee and have for as long as I've used Thunderbird, several years at least.

When I attempt to delete an email, the program hangs and after a minute or so I get a message telling me that a script has stopped working, this is the script Script: resource:///modules/gloda/datastore.js:2065

Here are the most recent crash reports

They are not complete because I have had to go into task manager and force quit several times when the program had hung.

This forum is flooded with people complaining about Thunderbird being slow, crashing or just not working. They all use McAfee. So my guess is McAfee released a bad update, although some blame the Microsoft update with 11 updates. Try asking McAfee is they have any clues.

This support thread ion their web site is seeking logs. Perhaps you can assist them. https://community.mcafee.com/message/327436
