I have entered words by mistake over time and instead of removing them one by one which seems to be difficult to do, I just want to reset the dictionary back to the default so that all added words are gone.

hello, your personal dictionary is stored in a file named persdict.dat within your profile folder. in order to access the folder go to firefox > help > troubleshooting information, click on profile folder/show folder. you can then either open the file with a text editor and easily edit the entries or just delete the whole file if you want everything gone.

I can't find the persdict.dat. What does that tell me if the file isn't there?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
