I have two requests. I want to eliminate the inbox search bar in the upper right of my browser. Second i want to eliminate the search functionality in.the address/navigation bar. I want to be able to type in an address like cnn and hit the enter key and go directly to cnn.com. Now I have to type in cnn and then hit the Ctrl and enter keys to do that. I find it a problem to have the address bar also function as a search bar.

You should update to Firefox 23.

It is possibly not wise to eliminate the search box on the right. In Firefox 23 the search bar is used to set the search engine used in the address bar. It is easy to remove if you wish.

  1. Right click in some empty space on the navigation tool bar. (Not within the search bar).
  2. Use the customise option, a palette [Customize Toolbars] opens with different icons on it. Drag the searchbar off the navigation bar and onto the palette. Click the [done] button.

It is likely that the two bars will be combined into one in the near future.

Any particular reason for these requests?

You did not include full troubleshooting information did you have problems trying to follow the prompts ? (I suspect there is a problem namely a 800 Char limit ) Are you able to post your troubleshooting information into the next posts, your extensions, and your changed preferences.

The above article explains that domain guessing may be turned on and it will behave in the manner you described as your wish. However with domain guessing off if you have visited the site previously it should quickly auto complete often after you type only the first few letters, that is pressumably even more convenient.

Great, thanks for posting back.

Just bear in mind future Releases of Firefox may spring surprises on you. As I mentioned the two bars are likely to be combined in the near future.

Further in the future there was talk of a system using tab searches but that is probably speculation at present.
