I search the web for some item with Google.ca and get a list of web sites. When I click on any of these, the search takes very very long and often comes up with some very strange site not related to the one desired.

Could this mean that my PC is infected?

This type of behaviour can be caused by malware. Try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:
