Did you contact gmail as to why it refused the connections?
Not yet, its Christmas day, and since the login password issue popped up out of the blue, on an account that's been working (with no alterations made recently to my Thunderbird settings), I assumed others may have encountered this issue and solved it; It turns out that this evening (almost 48 hours from the first occurrence) it seems to have begun working properly again. Don't know why.
But, as a side issue....
I find this support forum nearly impossible to search, I always have a hard time finding a page on Mozilla.org to begin a keyword search... either it won't let me search or comes up with items bearing no relation to my search. I only found this posting (which I forgot to bookmark) by looking at a list of my own previously-posted questions from this link:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/messages/sent
I could use pointers on where to go initially to do a keyword search on questions (submitted by other users) already asked and answered about Thunderbird (or Firefox) issues.
Hi, According to your data, you're not using OAuth 2.0 for password authentication.
- Go to your account settings.
- Select the Server Settings panel for your Gmail account.
- Set Authentication method to OAuth2.
For more information, check out the following video:
Thanks, Chris, as I said in my prior post, it had started working again, with authentication method of Normal.
I had "received" an email from Google around the time of the first failure to log in, but I didn't see it because it was sent to the email account that wouldn't let me log in using Thunderbird on my desktop computer; the email said: "Your Google Account was just signed in to from a new Windows device. You're getting this email to make sure it was you." I don't know what "new Windows device" that would have been, and the IP address Google's message gave me doesn't match my IP although it is in my town... I've changed my Google password just in case.
I tried your suggestion (OAuth2), and that failed, so I went back to the Normal setting.
Problem seems to have been solved.
I appreciate your trying to help.

I am not sure about the difficulty in finding a place to search. There is a search field labeled "Find Help" on the top right of every page on my browser.
On my contributor menu there is also an advanced search. I have no idea if or where that appears unless you are registered as a contributor. But here is a link to it. I assume you can get access. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/search/advanced
I find however, the search is about useless, and futzing around with the controls on the returned results to filter them by product and version just makes the poor results more difficult to deal with. The fact that more terms broadens the search as an AND is assumed in the search and it is not fun.
Personally I use Google. So I follow the search terms with Site:support.mozilla.org to limit Google results, or indeed sometimes just mozilla.org to pick up the bug reporting system and wiki pages. Unfortunately Mozilla block Search engines from support topics unless they are marked "solved", so ongoing topics are very difficult to locate. It makes locating "Hot" topics very very hard.
Thanks, Matt, that is very useful information
If you need to get to any previous posting by you then you could bookmark your profile page. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/car-nuts
Yes, thanks, I have my profile page bookmarked... it is the search of previously-answered questions (by others) for possible solutions, before I post my own question, that I found difficult. Matt had some good suggestions.
