I have asked this question before, but no working solution has been given...

If I try to add my gmail-account to Thunderbird I get the error:

accounts.google.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown. The server might not be sending the appropriate intermediate certificates. An additional root certificate may need to be imported. Error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER

Answers I have found tell me to add an exception. However, the link in the error message does nothing.

Please help. I'm about to give up on Thunderbird...

I notice from previous question that you say you use Bullguard. So assuming you are still using that product...

This issue is highly likely to be caused by your Anti-virus product.

When you try to set up a gmail account and it is an imap mail account, then you will be prompted to sign in to google account which should open using a browser to prove it really is you and then an AOuth2 password is set up automatically in Thunderbird.

I'm thinking that Bullguard is actually stopping the browser from opening that logon webpage.

First check your Bullguard AV is up to date just in case the problem you are experiencing has been resolved in a recent update.

check that your Bullguard Firewall is not blocking Thunderbird program. It should be an allowed program. check Bullguard is not blocking google in AV Settings

Or if google is not in safe results perhaps you could try adding it.

Check there is no malware causing an issue. Start computer in 'Safe mode' Run a scan.

If all clear, restart computer in Normal mode.

What anti-virus software do you use?
