The last update left Thunderbird very slow and sometimes unresponsive, I want to roll it back to the previous version I was running, I had no problem with it.

You may already have the installer for your previous version. Check your downloads folder.

If you don't have it, you can get it from here:

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

You may have to go searching for older versions of add-ons if any of them now prove to be incompatible.

Thank you, sweet and simple! I know I can't be the only person still running an old XP system, and version 52.0.* is a real dog on it.

I can tell you with fairly high certainty that 52.x isn't causing your performance issue.

More likely is antivirus software not playing nice with version 52. The direct way to check this, is to start Windows in safe mode and if the problem is gone then you suspect a program that starts when Windows is started normally.

The two ways to solve this are a) set exclusions for Thunderbird in your AV software https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues b) delete the thunderbird PROGRAM folder and reinstall it from http://getthunderbird.com/
