how do I transfer deleted items to the trash . I am doing it one at a time at the moment

The del key on the keyboard The Delete button on the toolbar The delete option in a right-click pop up menu.
But I suspect that isn't what you're asking about. To delete several or many messages at once, I'd select them using shift or ctrl in conjunction with the mouse or the home/end/pgup/pgdn and cursor keys.
