you click a link in an email and your internet connection goes off.

Do I have that right?

Yes - but also the internet randomly disconnects and I have to reboot both the computer & the modem . . . Does that strike you as more likely an ISP connection issue? Thank you, Ian

I would say it is probably neither Thunderbird or your ISP. per sae

I think you may find one of these is the issue

1. Windows 10 is acting up. (I am having issues where servers are not found an immediate repeat and they are found.) 2. Your anti virus program is not happy in it's new home 3.Your default browser is somehow not set right.

A good starting point may be to flush your DNS cache.
