Want to close outlook account permanently but use that email address only in Thunderbird. Have set up Thunderbird account with the previous outlook/msn address.

You cannot use an email address for something that does not exist. If you closed the outlook/hotmail webmail account, then emails cannot be received nor sent via the server.

Thunderbird is just an email client, it access the relevant server and downloads/sends mail via server. Thunderbird is not an ISP, nor a server, it is a program that runs on your computer that facilitates viewing of all emails from all mail accounts in one view and sending emails. So you do not need to logon to various webmail accounts.

If I have misunderstood your query please explain further.
