This is really a continuation of the discussion under: Why does Thunderbird not allow me to automatically save attachments without me opening an email? which has been closed to further comments. Briefly I am also a Eudora user who gets about 100 emails a day, about half with long attachments, most of which I am CC on. And Eudora has died because of certificate issues.

A long time ago I used Outlook. My mailboxes got really big. I could not search the attachments or email easily, and when I ran out of disk space the file was corrupted and I lost everything, text and attachments. This could still be a problem insofar as my attachment folder has 133 GB of data in it.

Briefly, I see where someone developed a program to automatically save attachments for Outlook and delete them from the mail stream. (https://www.mapilab.com/blog/save-outlook-email-attachments-separate-storage/) and I wonder if there is something similar for Thunderbird. This would be an ideal solution, particularly if it could be scheduled to run once a day or once a week.

Other than this problem there is a lot to like about Thunderbird. (And a lot not to like about Outlook.)

If you install FiltaQuilla, it's possible to create a filter that automatically saves or detaches attachments. The filter can be set to run manually or automatically when new mail arrives.
