I had the easy to find Thunderbird circle, which somehow was replaced with a white rectangle icon. How do I get the old icon back. It is MUCH easier to see in a lineup.

My guess you have a corrupt icon cache. Microsoft have instruction in this community question http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/icon-cache-gets-corrupted-after-installing-new/d92093bf-b424-4f67-8bb4-53112355dcfb
