Why did all of my old bookmarks delete with the new update in May without ever being notified that they would be gone?

I just recently decided to go look for a specific item in my bookmarks to find that everything before the update in May is gone. I have tried all of the "solutions" online, but none of them where able to find my lost bookmarks. All of the solutions required that I saved my bookmarks first.

I was not notified with the update that my bookmarks would disappear, nor was I ever told that the only way to truly save my bookmarks if they disappeared would be by saving them.

Next you go to do an update, why don't you make sure that doesn't happen again. I swear by Mozilla Firefox and have been using it for years, but at this point, I'm so angry I'm considering switching to Google Chrome.

Hello,

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
    • Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks.
    • Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks button win 2 or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
  2. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

It didn't help, as the only things that were backed up was the stuff from after the update in May. Everything before it is gone. But thank you for trying to help.

I found some of the stuff I lost, so I'm not so angry anymore. It would still have been nice if provisions to prevent that from happening would have been looked into before the did the update.

I have found an incompatibility in the older revision JSON files that your bookmarks are stored in to the newer client. It could be that the new client simply can't see them as a result of this incompatibility.

Please check the following directory for JSON files dated older than the update in May just in case: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[generated stuff].default\bookmarkbackups

If you're unable to see the AppData Folder, please enable Hidden files and folder by clicking on the Organise button from any folder (located top left of window), and then the following: Folder & search options > View Tab > Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives.

If JSON files are located there, which are dated older than the update and you wish to restore them, please make a copy of this folder on your desktop, and uninstall the current revision of firefox (Temporarily). Reinstall an older revision, import the JSON file of your choosing, then export them as an HTML file, before finally upgrading back to the latest revision of Firefox. Once the latest revision of Firefox is installed again, import the HTML file, and this should restore your bookmarks.

If an older JSON file is not available, see if there's a shadowcopy of the file by going to Computer, right click your drive, Restore previous versions, click on the date of your shadowcopy and click on open, then navigate to the same location mentioned and copy it onto your current desktop.

If no shadowcopies are available, you could be out of luck. You could try a system restore point dating to before the update, which should roll back Firefox to the older revision, and may restore your bookmarks too, but at this point hope is sparse.

I've experienced the same frustration myself just recently. I was able to fix the issue, and I hope the same applies in your situation o_o"
