I never created a folder labled "important" so I don't know the rules about how things end up here. I am generally confused as to why thunderbird retains messages in an "all mail" folder when I set up rules to parcel these messages into discrete folders. Is there any guide to this business?

Gmail account?

If so, go to your gmail webpage and sort it out there. You can disable its automatic sorting into Important and also disable presentation of this and other folders (e.g. All Mail) to your email client.
