I have the latest version of Download Helper 4.9.21 and it is on the add ons list but I cannot access it from the tool bar as I used to be able to. This is since Firefox up graded to the latest version. Similarly, my Real Downloader also has stopped working.

Occasionally an extension will interfere with the icons of other extensions. This has come up in a few threads in the past several weeks, but unfortunately I can't remember which one(s) were identified as causing the problem.

Could you view your Navigation Toolbar in Customize mode and try moving icons around and see whether that makes a difference?

Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

I cant see the Navigation Toolbar in Customise mode, only the standard customization view. I removed an unwanted icon (Amazon Wishlist) from the Nav toolbar but the Download Helper icon is still missing. It used to sit right next to the Amazon icon.

Sorry, "Navigation Toolbar" is Mozilla-speak for the bar that contains the address box, search box, home button, etc. You definitely should see that bar in Customize mode.

Okay, but all there is to see in here are the standard cut, paste, print, seperator etc, plus the Amazon icon I put in there earlier. The icon for downloadhelper is not visible anywhere. Yet if I go into my add ons in the tools menu, the program is visible, not high lighted and I have the option to select Options, Disable or Remove. I have tried to remove and reinstall but no joy.

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file if the above didn't help.

Hi, I came down this evening and saw your message. I opened Firefox and had an extra tab telling me an addon I installed this morning had successfully installed. I went to the View Tab and I had an extra toolbar option of Web print from my Epson printer which I installed 2 months ago and has only appeared now. I ignored it for now and opened customize view. Low and behold there was the icon for Downloadhelper!! I dragged it to its correct position next to the forward arrow and closed the customize view. Fandabadoozy, happy days. I closed Firefox and restarted. Guess what???? Icon gone again, not in the customize view, and the new toolbar option has also disappeared.

So now I tried your second suggestion and I deleted the localstore.rdf file but it has made no difference. I am confused as to why it should work for one session then go tits up again the very next time I start Firefox. Also getting frustrated as I have used Firefox for many years and encouraged many of my friends to use it as well. Never had problems until now.

Could you check whether any of your security software has a feature to lock your browser configuration to prevent changes (i.e., it reverts the changes)?

I run Vipre and Malwarebites and have been running both for 8 years and have not encountered this issue in all that time. I have checked both and cannot find any method of locking the browser in either.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
