I'm using Thunderbird version 1:68.4.1+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 on Ubuntu 18.04, and all incoming messages are showing as plain text, even though some are sent as HTML messages. The same messages viewed in Evolution or Outlook correctly show the HTML content. I do have the path "View > Message Body As > Original HTML" set. I also have checked, "View > Display Attachments inline" ... and that option is enabled. Are there any other preferences that may be relevant? I am not running any applications which would serve as a proxy.

Thanks for any advice that you may have here.

As an additional note, I have configured Thunderbird to allow remote content.

Seems like you did everything correctly. Try switching it to "Simple HTML" and Quitting TB. Relaunch TB and set it BACK to "Original HTML" - see if you can jog it out of a wrong setting ...

Thanks for your suggestion, but toggling the settings + restarting the application did not resolve the issue.

Try restarting from the help menu with addons disabled and continue in safe mode when prompted. And difference in safe mode?
