Mail from one of my long-time contacts is suddenly being rejected. I am using Thunderbird on this end; set up as POP to mail.hover.com with port 995.

That is a server refusing the delivery. It doesn't seem to me that the email client in use has any bearing on the error.

I would hope that hover.com offer you a website where you can check your incoming email. I doubt very much that this declined message can be found there, as you might expect if the failure occurred in the final delivery to you via your email client.
