This is back after not working for several versions. Have a read and see if it works for you : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

That function (for opening a new Tab) is largely controller by how the hyperlink is coded; IOW how the person that wrote the webpage wants the hyperlink to open - "same" or "new". Best thing is to take control of that action yourself; Middle-click and {Ctrl + Click} will open a hyperlink in a new Tab almost all the time.

The alternative is as Pkshadow mentioned, an extension that changes how "Click" works on hyperlinks.

Hi, if you mean that you want search results to open in a new tab; you can set Google to always open results in a new tab by: Search for anything in the search bar to open the results page, then > Options (top right corner) > Search Settings > 'Results Window,' and tick/check 'Open search results in a new browser window.'

For other search engines you will need to look for something similar in their settings.

Seems to vary slightly in different versions of Google. Try (on the toolbar in search results) Settings > Search settings - Where results open.
