does having duplicate applications in the options window slow my computer?

My laptop has been running very slow, so I have been looking at things I can do to combat that. I looked in Tools/Options at Applications, and I see that many things are repeated once or twice with what appears to be the exact Contact type and Action. Can I remove the duplicates, or is that not contributing at all to the slowing in speed? It's not just Firefox that is slow, it is pretty much everything. Once in a while it's better for a bit, but not for long and I can't figure out why.

No. That are actually different actions.
They may show the same, but they are for different MIME types.

You can try to clear the History to see if that helps.
See Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox

You can start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files) See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
