filtering email for junk settings

I have for so long tried to let TB learn what is junk but nothing seems to work. I have also started taking the time to first mark as junk and then go into that junk folder and create a filter. My settings do not seem to make a difference. I have the filter set Mark before junk classification, match ANY of the following (so the @xxxx shows), and in the last section I have tried to set it to DELETE and also to MOVE message to junk folder on that email address. Nothing seems to work. I know there can be many junk senders from the same @xxx address but at some point I would think this "learning" process would take hold. Should I just give up on this timely filters and just mark as junk and then delete? Am i doing something wrong so my filters or junk settings are not filtering out new junk emails?

You'd need to be way more specific about what this means.

I have also started taking the time to first mark as junk and then go into that junk folder and create a filter.

What's the point of creating a filter after a message has been classified as Junk and been moved to the Junk folder?

Should I just give up on this timely filters and just mark as junk and then delete?

The attempt to fight spam using static filters is futile. Just use Thunderbird junk mail controls, and let Thunderbird automatically delete messages moved to the Junk folder, e.g. after 14 days. Also see https://support.mozilla.org/kb/thunderbird-and-junk-spam-messages

Thank you for your reply..I agree the filters seem futile. I set my auto delete as you directed. I also have the box to mark as read for junk mail UNchecked but it still puts them into the junk folder as read. No really big inconvenience but wondered if there is another box I should check too.

I'm seeing this too, but haven't found a way to fix it so far. I won't loose any sleep over it though.

I know you have basically solved your issue to your satisfaction, but the reality is the junk filtering does not look at the address sending mail to determine if the content is junk. Not knowing this is a frequent cause of folk thinking it is somehow broken. What I am saying is it will not take hold, because the system is not set to even consider it. There are very valid reasons for not looking at the address, mostly that spam is frequently send from legitimate addresses that are in no way related to the spammer or what they are selling.

Thank you Matt, it would then seem helpful for TB not to have the option on the filter menu to select the FROM @xx if TB does not look at it.

Thunderbird filters on the from in message filters... the junk filter is not a standard filter and it does not. The junk filter a Bayesian learning filter. Basic mail filters are not so do not learn.
