Can't send gmail messages from [email protected]

My Thunderbird client has been working just fine until suddenly this morning when I attempt to send messages I get an error message that says, "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again." Trying again accomplishes nothing. Mail is coming in just fine.

I'm going to reply to my own post. The solution to this problem was to get into the Thunderbird (Tools, Account Settings, Outgoing SMTP, Edit) outgoing message dialog, and change the Authentication Method to "Normal Password" from "OAuth2". This has been discovered by others as well, from whose experience I profited. You'd think Google could have learned this and changed the default setting by now, but, apparently this doesn't always cause problems.
