I'm using Mozilla 19.0.1 but this has been happening for the last several versions, when I open a pdf it displays but when I download it downloads as something without an extension (even though the downloader *says* it's a pdf). Then when I try to open the download it asks which program to use every time and I then have to save the download as a pdf. A yellow bar across the top of my Firefox window showing a pdf says "This pdf might not be displayed correctly." and offers me a different option but I get the same result: having to use numerous steps to save the pdf as a pdf. I have the Adobe Acrobat plug-in 11.0.2.0 installed and enabled. In Options > Applications I have it set to use Adobe Acrobat in Firefox but I've tried changing this without making any difference. What has happened to the bar across the bottom of an online Adobe document? Thanks.

I think the problem is just from one site I use and I can work around that. Pdfs from other sites are okay. Please close this question. Thanks.

Some pdf s may not be compatible with the Firefox pdf viewer. Almost all pdf s should display in either the standalone Adobe viewer or the Adobe plugin.

The built-in Firefox pdf viewer is still undergoing development and improvements. Some of the problems with it will be forthcoming Firefox Releases. Some save file problems should be fixed in fx21fx22 (Currently the Nightly version)

  • Bug 738952 - "Save as..." File menu entry or Ctrl+S produces unexpected results when having a PDF file opened within PDF Viewer

Workarounds.
Either view using the plugin, or download as is and edit the filetype.

The documents display fine; they just don't download into a usable format without taking several extra steps and I save lots of pdfs. I will edit the file type and hope Firefox fixes this in a future release. Thanks for your help.

Hi again Babs26,
You could consider installing Firefox22 now as an additional browser, and using that when you do the work involving pdf s

Alternatively
Presumably if you use the Adobe plugin to view them they both display ok and download ok with the correct file extension. I suggested that in my last post with a link to the instructions. Did you try that ?
