Have a intranet web site that have links to local server in format: "file://servername/sharename/filename.ext" Link shows up as "file:///sharename/filename.ext" (status bar when mouse over). When clicking the link, nothing happens. In IE the documents opens. Is there any setting that stripps/filters the serverername? when select View source, the link is correct i <a> tag. When copied from view source, the link opens in Firefox.

You need 5 slashes for a server name.

file://///servername/sharename/filename.ext
