I was trying to move my profile from a notebook computer running Windows 7 to my old desktop, running Windows XP. After doing this, I get an error message "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections" Now my desktop does not access the internet at all, even using internet explorer.

It is not really recommended to move a full profile from one computer or OS to another computer.
Only move the files that you really need and that are safe to copy.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

See "Firefox connection settings" in Server Not Found - Troubleshoot connection problems

You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select No Proxy
