Since the Mozilla update to deal with the add-on problem, Firefox tabs crash constantly.

Earlier today, Firefox updated itself to fix the Add-On certificate problem. Everything--even some of my add-ons--was working fine before that. As soon as the update was installed, Firefox tabs started crashing constantly. At first it was about 50% of websites, mostly complicated or code-heavy sites like Facebook. Twitter loaded fine but could not play videos. Now it is nearly every site, including some that were working all afternoon. I even cannot load Mozilla's own support pages. The browser is now ENTIRELY unusable--much worse than just having add-ons broken!! I also have to mannualy submit crash reports, because there is no button to submit on the crash report page.

Hi maritov, I'm sorry to hear about this problem.

Have you done a normal shutdown and restart of Windows since this problem began? That is useful to clear file locks, complete any pending updates, and force a fresh load of Windows components.

In the data you shared, there were two crash report links. They both have the same "signature" which seems somewhat rare:

LdrpMapAndSnapDependency

It seems to be related to playing media -- both crashing threads go through the MP4Decoder piece -- for which Firefox depends on Microsoft Media Foundation components. However, I can't tell why it suddenly stopped working normally.

Oh, I didn't notice those new report IDs. The last four are the same as before. Some of the new ones are EMPTY; that's not useful. Two run through plugin-container, so that sounds like an issue with Flash. And the other one involves graphics code. It's difficult to see the pattern.

Do you recall ever needing to disable hardware acceleration (using your graphics card) before?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Same problem occurs in safe mode. I've had this computer since January--Firefox has crashed maybe 3 times in all of those months until today when the update loaded, when it became constant. Nothing else changed.

Probably the ones you saw are the same because they happened right one after another--I may have even been retrying the same or similar websites. Here are some more: bp-427c7cdd-3f50-4f9e-9aa4-94d180190506 5/6/2019 6:29 PM bp-855c3cd1-e831-4202-ad1b-8e7780190506 5/6/2019 6:29 PM bp-f3ee62b8-36c4-49e7-abda-ed35a0190506 5/6/2019 6:29 PM bp-72f5d230-58fc-4f45-b2d7-74d740190506 bp-a1111ead-c334-4441-ba04-ea2cb0190506 5/6/2019 6:26 PM bp-df4716ca-f33f-4345-8b1c-385f60190506 5/6/2019 6:26 PM bp-f4ebd355-0752-4aad-abef-322620190506 5/6/2019 6:26 PM

All 7 over those are the "LdrpMapAndSnapDependency" signature that comes after calling the MP4Decoder.

Did you already restart Windows?

You may need to reinstall Firefox:

Clean Reinstall

This takes about 5 minutes. It's not about your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

If you use Microsoft Office, please change your default browser to Internet Explorer temporarily before the next step.

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer (hold down the Windows key and press E to launch it), right-click > rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement at your next startup?
