When creating an email, normally the window contains a navbar - file, edit, view etc, and below is another row of functions - send, spelling, attach etc, and then below that the From field. All of a sudden (while still using Thunderbird) the top 2 lines have disappeared. The first thing I get is the From field, so amongst other things, I can't send my email.

With the Compose window open, use F10 or alt to make the Menu Bar appear. Then in that menu go to View|Toolbars and tick the checkboxes for Menu Bar and Composition Toolbar.

F10 is a standard Windows keystroke, and alt is a standard accelerator key to invoke keyboard shortcuts. So alt+v will open the menu at the View submenu.
