Latest NVIDIA driver 398.36 broke FF61 with "Use hardware acceleration when available" enabled. White window. What is the issue?

I can't run FF61 anymore with hardware acceleration enabled. FF opens with a pure white window: no menubars, tabs, content, even the minimize, maximize, and close buttons are all white. Safemode Firefox works OK. Disabling all extensions doesn't help. Only thing that fixes the normal mode is going to settings (has to be in Safemode to see settings) and disabling the option "Use hardware acceleration when available".

Versions: Windows 10 Home, 64bits, 10.0.17134 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, with latest driver 398.36 broke FF61.0. Previous driver 398.11 worked fine.

(Not 100% sure if FF 61.0 or NVIDIA 398.36 is the root cause, since both where updated about the same time. That is 398.11 and FF 60.0.2 together worked just fine for sure.)

Chosen solution

I'm running the latest release version of FF (and continue to do so), and I have already been running it (and Thunderbird) with the hwa disabled. Thanks.

I just wanted to bring this issue to your attention. If you can't do anything, and the issue is reported/listed in Bugzilla, then this ticket can be closed. Thank you!

hi iNetRunner, thank you for reporting this problem. in order to test if it was due to the firefox update could you try running firefox 60 again and see if it has the same issue with hwa turned on?: https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/60.0.2/win64/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2060.0.2.exe

Yes, the problem happens with 60.0.2 also. (Checked with Process Explorer that the firefox.exe was 60.0.2 since it gets auto-updated on next startup.)

Also discovered today that the same issue is happening with Thunderbird 52.8.0 32-bit. (Hadn't started that since I installed the latest GeForce drivers.) Also there disabling hwa restores functionality.

Please update to Firefox 61, and than either downgrade your graphics driver, or disable Hardware Acceleration until Nvidia releases an update
