Why can't you have "Show your top sites" buttons on Start page?

Title sums it up! Start page basically sits there and need to open a second tab to see the "Top Sites" buttons for quick access. Seems like a useless step for no reason.

Sorry, try about:newTab - with the capital T.

It works for me when I tried it.

You can set whatever you want as your home page. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-set-the-home-page

Use about:newtab to have the New Tab page with the top sites tiles.

Well, I read that also, unfortunately, the about:newtab function doesn't seem to work! Did you try it? Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I doubt it.

That was it! Also had to have it as the only tab for some reason, but that solved the problem. Thanks for your help.
