If anyone wants to share the destination URL of the tile causing this issue, it might be useful for testing.

The webpage that triggered sound for me was http://lotto.pch.com.

Removing the tile from the new tab page by clicking the little 'X' in the upper right of the offending tile fixes the problem. If you want to prevent the problem from happening on future tabs, you can prevent firefox from showing your recent tabs on the new tab page.

In the upper right hand corner of the new tab page is a gear icon. Click the gear icon and you have three options: "Show suggested and your top sites", "Show your top sites", and "Show blank page". Selecting "Show blank page" should solve the problem now and in the future.

You probably have zoom set to "Text Only." If you like, you can switch between Text Only zoom and Full zoom using either:
  • (menu bar) View > Zoom > Zoom Text Only (if you do not normally display the menu bar, you can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show it temporarily)
  • about:config => browser.zoom.full => double-click to switch between full (true) and text only (false)

I never noticed that setting before. Thanks.

Hi konagal1, if the music has stopped, and no PCH thumbnail appears after loading the site again, then most likely you hid it from the page successfully and will not be bothered by background loading any more. I certainly hope that is the case. Although the hidden sites are listed in about:config, they are unrecognizable because Firefox assigns codes to them. If you look at the following preference, you'll see what I mean: browser.newtabpage.blocked I'm sure there is some way to look up those codes to see what sites they are, but I haven't found the motivation to find out how to do that.

I didn't know that clicking the little 'X' was blocking them from appearing. I was removing them to see what would come up from the unseen tiles. I only had 6 viewing at a time. I just cleared the setting above to remove all sites being blocked. It would have been helpful to see what sites they were. There is at least one I'd like to keep blocked. ;-)

It appears that you can also set the number of tiles to keep by adjusting the browser.newtabpage.columns and browser.newtabpage.rows values. Is there a maximum or minimum value that you know of?

I don't think there is a minimum or maximum, but the page doesn't have a scroll bar, so you end up only seeing the ones that fit the current shape of the page (for example, maximized on full HD I see two rows of five tiles at my default zoom level).

Thanks everyone for you input. I haven't tested it out this morning yet. But if it comes back I'm sure you will be hearing from me.
