Outlook 2007 is silently taking over some of Thunderbird's defaults

I have a system with both Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird (31.5.0 at the moment) installed. I want Thunderbird to be the default mail client, and as far as I can tell, I have configured Outlook to not be the default ... but whenever I run Outlook, it silently takes over some set of defaults from Thunderbird so I have to click the "Set default" button quite frequently when I start Thunderbird. I do not know which defaults Outlook is grabbing.

How do I fix this so that Outlook *never* takes over any defaults?

This sounds like a How do I use Outlook question. Outlook is a Microsoft product. You might ask them.

You are essentially correct, it's an Outlook issue. I have been living with this problem for a number of years now, and I've been searching for a solution. I've come up empty, and I'm hoping that someone here knows how to fix it.
